Wessex 4302 (UW43) Underwater Epoxy Adhesive

Wessex 4302 (UW43) is a pigmented, thixotropic, two-component epoxy adhesive engineered for exceptional performance in demanding environments. Formulated to cure at temperatures as low as 5 °C, it bonds effectively to mild steel, glass-reinforced plastics (GRP), and similar substrates even when fully immersed in fresh or sea water.

Its advanced chemistry allows it to tolerate light oil or grease contamination on bonding surfaces, delivering strong, durable bonds under conditions normally considered unsuitable for adhesives. Available in low, medium and high viscosity systems.

Our range of off-the-shelf epoxy products provides high-quality, proven solutions for a huge number of specialist subsea applications.

Standard Viscosity System

Wessex 4302 (UW43) is a two-component epoxide based adhesive. This system can bond mild steel, glass reinforced plastics and similar materials when totally immersed in either fresh or sea water and tolerate some oil or grease contamination on the bonding surfaces. This adhesive is capable of forming strong bonds under conditions normally regarded as unacceptable for adhesives.

Low Viscosity System

Developed specifically for laminating applications, this low-viscosity, two-component epoxy offers exceptional wet-out characteristics, ensuring thorough fibre saturation and strong laminate integrity. While ideal for composite laminating, it also delivers excellent adhesion to GRP and a wide range of other substrates. The formulation performs reliably even at low temperatures, producing durable, high-strength bonds in challenging or underwater environments where conventional adhesives may not be well versed.

High Viscosity System

This filled, higher-viscosity epoxy adhesive is specifically formulated for structural bonding in underwater environments. Its higher thixotropy prevents movement or sagging at higher ambient temperatures.  In extreme circumstances will bond to contaminated substrates.

Emergency Repairs

The Emergency Underwater Repair Pack provides all materials required to carry out emergency repairs to fibreglass and other compatible structures in submerged conditions. At its core is UW43HV, a two-part filled epoxy adhesive formulated for structural bonding underwater. This thixotropic system is engineered to adhere strongly to most glass-reinforced plastics (GRP), a wide range of polymeric materials, and many painted or coated surfaces, maintaining bond integrity even under full immersion in fresh or seawater.

The adhesive’s chemistry allows it to cure at temperatures as low as 3°C and to tolerate light oil or grease contamination on prepared surfaces that would normally compromise conventional adhesives. These properties make it suitable for urgent, in-situ repairs where environmental control is limited. Typical repair applications include sealing or re-bonding pipes, hull sections, and steel plates in marine or industrial environments.

By combining all necessary application tools and the specialist UW43HV adhesive in a single pack, this kit enables efficient, reliable repair work in locations where rapid response is critical and working conditions are harsh.

Questions & Answers

What is the minimum temperature for Wessex 4302 (UW43)?

The Wessex 4302 (UW43) when mixed will fully cure at temperatures as low as 5 °C, making it ideal for colder environments.

Is Wessex 4302 (UW43) moisture and underwater tolerant?

Yes, the Wessex 4302 (UW43) can cure even in the presence of moisture and is suitable for underwater applications perfect for emergency marine repairs.

How effective is Wessex 4302 (UW43) when oil and grease contaminate surfaces?

The Wessex 4302 (UW43) formulation remains effective even on surfaces with light oil or grease contamination, reducing the need for perfect prep in urgent situations.

What can the Wessex 4302 (UW43) bond too?

The Wessex 4302 (UW43) can bond mild steel, glass reinforced plastics and similar materials when totally immersed in either fresh or sea water.

Why is the Wessex 4302 (UW43) resin a different colour to the hardener?

The Wessex 4302 (UW43) yellow low viscosity epoxy resin component (“Part A”) is mixed with the blue hardener component (“Part B”). Equal weights of the resin and hardener are blended thoroughly together. The differently coloured components provide a visual aid to complete mixing which is indicated when the adhesive forms a uniform green colour.
